Strange Aeons by PatrickMcEvoy Strange Aeons by PatrickMcEvoy
© 2005 Fantasy Flight Games

This one's from 2005, and Fantasy Flight Game's Call of Cthulhu CCG. It's an aspect of Nyarathotep in one of his more inhuman and unknowable guises... perhaps even his natural state?

This was a last-minute addition to the set, so they called me in to do it fast, and it ended up being used for box art and also on the CoC web site as the top banner for a couple of years.

I've gotten a lot of these quick turnaround jobs over the years! ;)

Wanna know what my favorite thing about Nyarlathotep is?
Each and every one of his masks is capable of driving a people insane--most of these are pretty obvious.
But he can also appear as a human.
Which means that, somewhere in the universe, there is a race who finds the appearance of a human being so horrible as to drive them to madness.

Believe it or not, VERY quickly! It was a last-minute job for Darrell, the first Call of Cthluhu AD at Fantasy Flight, and I didn't have much time to do more than a few sketches and a super-fast rendering. Luckily, it all went right the first time. :D - Thanks!

Nyathathotep has a thousand masks. Who knows which is his natural state, or if all of them are.

Hi,

Yes it's the regular Adobe Photoshop! It's all a matter of how you use it - there are a lot of Photoshop painting tutorials online, just takes a bit of practice.. (Well, a year or two, but it's no more difficult than any other skill.). Anyone can do it eventually!

Wow! Thats awesome man! I love the intricacy of the tentacles! The mouth is creepy enough, then you throw in the mask for an extra level of creepiness! Very nice touch!

I rate this a good 4 out of 5 Chainsaws on my Psycho-meter. :D

Ooohhh! Lovecraftian art! I've picked this one to comment on because I love the way Nyarlathotep oozes and because the pools of night sky/stars are amazing!

I'll be watching your art now... ^_^

This mask doesn't really fir in that image...
Reply
:iconpatrickmcevoy:

Well, it isn't meant to "fir" it!

The thing is, Nyarlathotep wears the "masks" of his different avatars, assuming many identities throughout the universe. So the mask is symbolic of his many identities.

I mean that this mask looks like cropped from other image.

Ah, so maybe it stands out too much? That's a valid concern, though I really wanted it to pop for a few reasons. Mostly, because it was the title of the game (the MASKS of Nyarlathotep) but also because I wanted the creature and the mask to look very different, because this entity assumes totally different avatars. But point taken!
