The Bloody Tongue by PatrickMcEvoy The Bloody Tongue by PatrickMcEvoy
2005 Fantasy Flight Games

Another from my "Call of Cthulhu" era. It was always fun doing visual interpretations of Lovecraft's creatures, because he left a lot to the imagination. My A.D. on this, Darrell Hardy, described my picture of this guy as a "meat tunnel". Ew. :D

is this from Lovecraft's letter about a nightmare he had? where he saw two men, and one turned into a werewolf and the other turned into a creature that the description sounds something like this picture?

I'm not sure where this creature comes from. I know that in Lovecraft's stories he references the Cult of the Bloody tongue. I also know it was Derleth who wrote of the Bloody Tongue being an aspect of Nyarlathotep. But as to which story actually describes him, and what author does so, I'm don't know at all. :( This is one the Call of Cthulhu AD just gave me a rough description of and I went from there!

Okay so I know this is based off of a lovecraftian creature, but which one, and from which story. Fantastic image by the way.

"The cult of the Bloody Tongue" is mentioned in at least one of Lovecraft's tales. The cult is devoted to Nyarlathotep, and in later Mythos tales (I think the earliest might be by Derleth) The Bloody Tongue is a creature described kind of like this, and is an actual aspect of Nyarlathotep.

Hmmm interesting I didn't realize there were aspects of Nyarlathotep. I've read most of Lovecraft's tales but his mythos are so detailed theres always things that I forget about until
I reread them. This is brilliant.

Yeah, I think the whole idea of "Aspects" of Nyarlathotep was introduced by later writers (Derleth et.al.), such as the Bloody Tongue, the King in Yellow and the Dark Pharaoh. It's a very interesting concept!

part of the reason that he left them to the imagination was because they were creepier that way. a few, such as cthulhu itself and the old ones from 'at the mountains of madness', which goes into scientific detail about them. somehow, though, the amorphous shoggoths win out...

is the description from lovecraft's buddy derleth? because i haven't read any of his stories. i don't recall it from my hpl anthologies, but i don't remember everything. i think he would be creepier if more of him were hidden in shadow, but i definitely would not EVER want to meet him :D

I think you're right, I'm reasonably sure it's Derleth, though I haven't read the story either. :) H.P. indeed referenced the cult of the Bloody Tongue, but someone else asked me what story this guy specific character was in and I realized I couldn't think of it. So indeed I'm theorizing Derleth.

I'm not sure, really - he had a somewhat specific description for a Lovecraft character (the AD at Fantasy Flight sent the passage) - maybe he was introduced by Derleth later? I do know for sure Lovecraft mentions the "cult of the Bloody Tongue" once or twice in the Cannon.

You know, he's an avatar of Nyarlathotep, which does seem more of a Derleth thing, so maybe that's it. Hmmm... not sure at all!
